Dawson Creek, BC – Northern Development Initiative Trust announced today that Greensmart Manufacturing Ltd. has been approved for funding under Northern Development’s Capital Investment and Training Rebate program to support the creation of fifty-three new jobs to bring the manufacturing enterprise to approximately 200 jobs, a major driver in the Peace Region economy.
Greensmart Manufacturing Ltd. manufactures modular homes, well site office structures, commercial buildings, hotels, motels and affordable living complexes. Over the past several months, production has increased substantially to meet the demands of new opportunities including pre-manufactured school buildings. Greensmart continues to bid large projects, currently bidding on another 140 LEEDS certified pre-manufactured classrooms for 2010 delivery. The Greensmart facility currently has up to eighteen LEEDS certified pre-manufactured classrooms in various stages of construction at any given time.
Northern Development supported the initial expansion in May of 2009 with rebate funding to support the creation of eighty-three new full-time positions through the Capital Investment and Training Rebate program. This additional expansion brings the total number of new jobs supported through the program to 136. In addition to the expansion, this program will provide Greensmart with rebate funding for improving manufacturing capacity and increasing competitiveness through the purchase of updated equipment.

The new employees will be provided with in-depth training on many aspects of the operation, including green building practices, techniques, safety and technical training. Much of the training is highly specialized, time consuming and very expensive. Northern Development’s rebate allows these training costs to be off-set, leading to a higher level of training provided to new employees.
“Training costs during an expansion is a major financial consideration, especially where the training required is specialized in nature,” stated Alex Wik, Chief Executive Officer of Greensmart Manufacturing Ltd. “We will continue to be a major contributor to the economy in Dawson Creek and area.”
“The 136 jobs created through the expansion of Greensmart Manufacturing are exciting news for Dawson Creek and Northeast BC,” stated Dawson Creek Mayor Mike Bernier. “Northern Development’s program has proven to be highly responsive and builds on the competitive advantages of northern BC to attract investment and create jobs.”
To date, thirteen projects have been approved under Northern Development’s Capital Investment and Training Rebate Program. Northern Development’s investment of $5.85 million has resulted in 684 jobs being created over the next two years with a total investment of $48 million throughout central and northern BC.
