In 2014, Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society received a $250,000 grant from Northern Development through the Economic Diversification Infrastructure program towards this $15,700,000 project. This has been a funding partnership of Northern Development and Infrastructure Canada
On June 16, 2018, the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society publicly celebrated the grand opening of their recently expanded airport with a ribbon cutting ceremony, paper airplane contest and luggage toss. This much-anticipated event drew a crowd of approximately 300 people to celebrate the Northwest Regional Airport’s success.
Northern Development supported this multi-year, $15.7 million project with a $250,000 grant through its Economic Diversification Infrastructure program. Infrastructure Canada provided a $4.4 million grant to assist in the upgrades.
“Northern Development’s investment comes at a critical time as Northwest Regional Airport continues to break monthly passenger traffic records,” said Dave Pernarowski, former mayor of Terrace, when the funding was announced. “The improvements to our airport will help us better meet the needs of residents and visitors to the region and we appreciate the Trust’s assistance in helping us build the region’s infrastructure.”
The two-and-a-half-year project included a 1,594 square metre expansion to the main terminal building, which included new check-in area for departures, airline and security office areas, hold bag screening area, baggage make up area, airline cargo area, electrical, mechanical and communications rooms and an airside walkway. The existing terminal also received upgrades and a new boarding lounge and washrooms were added. The boarding gages and counters, preboard screening area, training room, board room and office areas were also improved.
