In 2008, District of Vanderhoof received a $336,000 grant from Northern Development through the Economic Diversification Infrastructure program towards this $1,360,000 project. This has been a funding partnership of District of Vanderhoof, Northern Development, Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society, Olympic/Paralympic Live Sites, and School District No. 91 (Nechako Lakes)
2012 – The District of Vanderhoof will be looking to host large competitive events at their field of dreams in the downtown core. The sports stadium, which received funding support from Northern Development, is located adjacent to the Nechako Valley Secondary School and is now home to the Nechako Valley Vikings, the senior football and rugby team.
The new stadium which is equipped with a premier playing field, a six-lane running track, and bathrooms, has not only created a venue for large-scale sporting events in Vanderhoof, but has already increased community involvement.
"Northern Development was a major contributor to the successful completion of this valuable community project. The sportsfield upgrade was undertaken in partnership with School District #91 and has resulted in a user group agreement that ensures both school district and public access to the facility. Local contractors were successful in the tender selection process and this project was a great boost economically at a time when we needed it most."
Gerry Thiessen, Mayor, District of Vanderhoof"An example of the success of the sportsfield was this past spring which saw over 700 Kids and parents converge on our community for a day of fun, food and friendly competition. The spin-off from this event into our local businesses was evident as parents took the time to shop and socialize in our various restaurants and businesses. The community looks forward to hosting similar regional and provincial level sporting events in the coming years."
Gerry Thiessen, Mayor, District of VanderhoofIn the 2010 season, the Nechako Valley Secondary School track and field team took gold in zones for senior track and field. With the new stadium utilized, the squad saw an increase of over 30% more participation from the students from the previous year. With a sports centre to be proud of, the citizens of Vanderhoof are getting involved in their community and supporting their local sports teams, all while increasing their own physical fitness at this new recreational facility.
The District of Vanderhoof along with the various sporting groups, has plans to bid on and host regional and provincial events for a variety of sports including soccer, football, rugby, track and field, and lacrosse. Drawing in competitors and their families from all around the province will have a positive impact on local businesses and hotels.
