Communities Band Together To Purchase A Portable Events Facility In The Thompson-Nicola Region

In 2008, Village of Ashcroft received a $42,850 grant from Northern Development through the Economic Diversification Infrastructure program towards this $150,000 project. This has been a funding partnership of Village of Ashcroft, Northern Development, Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, and School Community Connections

2012- Festivals, schools, theatres, arts enthusiasts, and performance groups have all benefitted from a 2008 investment by communities in the Thompson-Nicola region. The municipalities of Ashcroft, Clinton, Lytton, Lillooet and Cache Creek have jointly purchased a portable performance staging system that will help bring community events to life and support non-profit arts groups and festivals throughout the region.

In 2007, the Thompson-Nicola municipalities, along with School District 74 (Gold Trail), undertook a consultative process to explore and identify collaborative opportunities. From this process, the five municipalities concluded that the purchase of a portable stage system would offer a significant benefit for shared use by local schools and non-profit organizations. The shared community stage project has since provided benefits to each of the communities by increasing the quality of seasonal festivities for residents and visitors to the region.

Positive Economic Impacts in the Thompson-Nicola

This system is now relied on in each of the communities and at many venues including schools, community halls, and public parks spaces in the region - many of which otherwise lack stages or professional sound equipment to host major events. The anticipated long-term results of the project will continue to foster an increase to the number and quality of theatrical and musical events in the Thompson-Nicola region, opportunities for specialized training in theatrical arts that are in demand for the movie and entertainment industries, and an increase in tourism dollars and rental revenues generated each year via seasonal festivities held in each of the communities.
