September 26, 2008

Northern Development CEO, Janine North, was interviewed by CBC Radio 1 regarding the release of the Mining Association of British Columbia’s Report on the Electrification of the Highway 37 Corridor.

Janine discusses the report that projects electrifying Highway 37 could directly trigger up to 10 mines, 10,700 jobs, $15 billion in investment and potentially up to $300 million in annual tax revenues in the region.

Concurrent with the release of the Report, Premier Gordon Campbell announced, “The Province of British Columbia will pursue the environmental assessment certificate and First Nations consultations necessary for the vital first steps of the northwest transmission line along Highway 37 to be put in place”.

The study points out that development of new mines in the region would be dependent on a number of factors, including the completion of feasibility studies, the continued strength of commodity prices and the availability of affordable electric power. Such development would also need to address the concerns of First Nations.
