In 2009, District of Logan Lake received a $28,000 grant from Northern Development through the Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program towards this $266,200 project. This has been a funding partnership of District of Logan Lake, Northern Development, and Recreation Infrastructure Canada
2012 – The Logan Lake Recreation Centre is the centre of activity for the community and includes an ice arena, curling rink, and weight room. The rec centre is found in the centre of Logan Lake just a short walking distance to the downtown commercial area where a variety of stores and shops are located.
In 2009, the District of Logan Lake raised enough funds to implement three phases of substantial upgrades throughout the facility. In phase one, the municipality installed a new roof, in phase two, which received funding support from Northern Development, over one hundred feet of gutters were replaced, thirty feet of down pipe was installed, and a large piece of concrete that ensures the structural integrity of the facility was replaced. The third and final phase that was yet to be completed at the time of this project will involve the installation of new indoor roof insulation.
"Prior to this project being undertaken, the recreation centre was in a state of decline and people were not using it. However, with these capital improvements usage of the recreation centre has improved. The District is now able to attract user groups from other nearby communities because of the availability of ice time and lower costs. These new visitors are also using our commercial services which is a positive impact."
Wayne Vollrath, Chief Administrative Officer, District of Logan lake"The second phase funding provided by Northern Development helped to make this project doable. Without these funds the project would have been delayed which would have adversely affected users and community businesses. Â The improvements to the recreation centre have had a positive impact on our community. With these funds, the District has been able to enhance and upgrade a core facility in our community."
Wayne Vollrath, Chief Administrative Officer, District of Logan lakeRecreation centres are a key attraction in almost every community. They attract visitors to the area through sporting events and tournaments, and typically draw revenues to the communities through the hospitality industry. Restaurants, shops, and hotels benefit from the number of out of town competitors that attend the tournaments that are held in the recreation centres. The Logan Lake Recreation Centre hosts annual thournaments at the facility each year. There are hockey tournaments, Figure skating competitions, ringette and broomball tournaments, and curling competitions. The events attract participants from many surrounding communities who may not otherwise visit Logan lake. The renovations have ensured that the facility will continue to operate, and that revenues are maintained.
Logan Lake recognizes that they must maintain and enhance the Logan Lake Recreation Centre to avoid the loss of residents to larger nearby municipalities such as Kamloops and Merritt. Attracting young families requires the kinds of recreational and sport programing currently provided at the Logan Lake Recreation Centre. Continued operation of the facility is part of an ongoing plan to offer health, fitness, and social benefits to all ages including the many senior citizens in Logan Lake.
