2012- With over two hundred current registered members and another one hundred and fifty annual walk-in users, the Terrace Rod and Gun Club has seen an increase in the demand on its facility every year since its inception. The Terrace Rod and Gun Club has found that there were no year-round facilities outside of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland for training and certification of firearms carriers – RCMP, Sheriff Services, Conservation Services, Fisheries and Ocean, Corrections Services, and Canada Customs Service at the time of this project. To reduce these organizations’ costs of travel to the Lower Mainland from northern communities, all of these law enforcement agencies have expressed strong interest and support for such a facility centrally located in Terrace.
Under this project, the Terrace Rod and Gun Club has undertaken a feasibility study to examine the potential for an indoor firearms range at their current range location located just outside Terrace in Thornhill. When built, the facility would provide year-around services to law enforcement agencies throughout northern and central British Columbia who are required to maintain firearms certifications, as well as for regional sport shooters of firearms and archery for recreation and hosted competitions.
The facility will also provide training and meeting room facilities for shooting safety and certification courses, such as the CORE, PAL and restricted programs, in addition to renting the training rooms to other users. The design and construction of additional capacity and indoor firearms and archery ranges will depend on a comparison of the economic, safety, environmental and social feasibility.
