In 2008, Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders Horse Club received a $30,000 grant from Northern Development through the Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program towards this $120,000 project. This has been a funding partnership of Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders Horse Club, Northern Development, Coast Sustainability Trust, and Local Businesses
2012- One of the best northern events to visit in the summer is the Bella Coola Rodeo, one of the largest amateur rodeos in Western Canada and a real wild west event. Cowhands show their skills kicking off with a gymkhana, bronc riding, barrel racing, calf tie-down, team roping, and bull riding. Attendees can also participate in the infamous cow patty bingo. The Bella Coola Rodeo, hosted by the Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders, takes place annually during the Canada Day long weekend in July. This unique experience features great rodeo action, nightly dances, and some of the finest salmon fishing in the world within a stones throw of the rodeo grounds! With plenty of opportunities for spectator involvement, the Bella Coola Rodeo offers an authentic Chilcotin adventure – with a twist.
In support of this important seasonal event, the Bella Coola Valley Ridge Riders Horse Club has made significant improvements to the rodeo grounds with funding support from Northern Development. Enhancements include new fencing, grandstand repairs, and concession improvements. This project is focused on supporting the annual rodeo and sustaining its operations that make an important contribution to Bella Coola and the region’s economy each year.
Maintaining the facility to current rodeo and equestrian standards is integral to the continued hosting of annual events and the potential to attract new events to the community. The Bella Coola Rodeo brings tourists and competitors from all over Western Canada to Bella Coola and the central coast region each year. This project supports the rodeo and provided temporary employment opportunities in the community during construction.
